SUSTAIN – a Swedish Initiative for Sustainability in Additive Manufacturing

The Swedish Initiative for Sustainability in AM was initiated in 2022 by the director of the Competence Centre in Additive Manufacturing for the Life Sciences (AM4Life, Prof. Persson), Uppsala University together with the directors of the Competence Centre in Additive Manufacturing for Metals (CAM2, Profs. Hryha and Nyborg), Chalmers University of Technology, and fellow researchers at Linköping University, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Lund University.

The aim of the initiative is to work together on sustainability issues specific to AM, with a focus on powder-based metal AM research, including powder manufacturing and AM process-related issues, e.g. sourcing, powder life cycle for a circular economy, and more. The Swedish Initiative for Sustainability in AM is based on running activities inside the respective competence centres as well as associated projects, with bi-annual open meetings to share progress in these aspects, discuss state-of-the-art and needs in this area from an academic and industrial perspective as well as plan for future collaborative projects. It is open to researchers also in other projects and institutions.
